Soul Legend Angie Stone Passes
The music world is mourning the loss of Grammy-nominated R&B and neo-soul singer Angie Stone, who tragically passed away at the age of 63 following a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama. The incident occurred on March 1, 2025, as Stone and her band members were traveling back to Atlanta after a performance in Mobile, Alabama. Their Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van overturned on Interstate 65 and was subsequently struck by a semi-trailer truck. Stone was the sole fatality in the crash; the other passengers survived with injuries.
Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s musical journey began in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, one of the pioneering female hip-hop groups. The trio gained recognition with their hit “Funk You Up.” Stone later became part of the R&B trio Vertical Hold before launching a successful solo career. Her debut solo album, Black Diamond (1999), featured the notable single “No More Rain (In This Cloud).” She continued to make her mark with subsequent albums like Mahogany Soul (2001) and Stone Love (2004), producing hits such as “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “Brotha.”
Throughout her career, Stone received multiple Grammy nominations and collaborated with artists like D’Angelo, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliott. She also ventured into acting, with roles in films such as The Hot Chick and The Fighting Temptations, as well as appearances on television shows including Moesha and Girlfriends.
Just days before her untimely death, Stone had announced plans for an extensive UK tour, expressing enthusiasm for her ongoing projects and a desire to connect with her international fanbase.
Stone is survived by her two children: daughter Diamond and son Michael. In a statement, they expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from fans, requesting privacy during their time of grief.
